Greek Isles

Greek Isles

There are of course many Greek Islands, each with their own allure, I have been fortunate enough to visit three of them: Corfu, Mykonos + Santorini. The best way to travel between the islands is obviously by boat. I visited the former two while on a Mediterranean cruise. While I can safely say cruising is not my preferred method of travel, it suited island hopping very well.

EXPERIENCE

Corfu: I had a wonderful adventure in Corfu when I first visited while backpacking in college. I arrived there from Venice via a trucking ferry (which was rather rough and bed-less) but was super pleased with my accommodations at the Pink Palace hostel. I was there off season and spent most of my time on four wheelers with new friends from the hostel exploring the citrus and olive orchards. Highlights here included the gorgeous views, Paleokastritsa beach, and the monastery. We especially enjoyed the beach, I hear there are many other lovely ones to check out, hard to compare when I only visited a few.

Mykonos: This island is known for it’s lovely seaside windmills and roaring nightlife. My sister and I ditched our parent’s on this evening of a family trip, and had a girl’s night out on the town. Be sure to check out main street for lots of restaurant and bar attractions! The streets are all cobblestone, however, so be mindful of your shoe choice, we witnessed some unfortunate late night stumbles.

Santorini: Known for it’s picturesque vistas, this is the most beautiful of the Greek Isles. With blue roofs on white walls, it’s hard to not to fall in love with this island.

EAT

As a whole, the Mediterranean cuisine is to die for. The highlights are the amazing seafood and fresh vegetables. This cuisine uses lots of eggplant, tomatoes, olives and legumes, which tend to be some of my favorites! Yogurt, lamb and feta are also popular ingredients. Be sure to try baklava for dessert loaded with nuts and honey. Gyros, spanakotyropita, tzatziki and dolmas should also make your list!
